Terms of Service
The short version
- PawParley is entertainment. It describes what a sound acoustically resembles. It does not translate your animal and it makes no claim to.
- It is never veterinary advice. Never use it to make a decision about your pet's health.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel, and you cancel through the App Store — not through us.
- Apple handles all payments and all refunds.
The rest of this page says the same things more carefully.
1. The agreement
These Terms are between you and the publisher of PawParley (“PawParley”, “we”, “us”). By downloading or using the PawParley app or this website, you accept them. If you don't accept them, please don't use the app.
You need to be at least 13 years old to use PawParley, and if you're under 18 you should have a parent or guardian's permission before making any purchase.
Before launch: the publisher's registered legal name and address must be inserted here and in the Privacy Policy, and the governing-law clause in section 18 confirmed against where the publisher is actually established.
2. What PawParley is — and what it is not
PawParley records a short clip of audio, identifies what kind of sound it contains, measures a small set of acoustic properties, and then offers a playful reading of what that vocalisation acoustically resembles.
That phrasing is deliberate and it is the honest limit of what the app does. In particular:
- PawParley does not translate your pet. It does not know, and does not claim to know, what your animal means, wants, feels or intends.
- The written reading attached to a result is an entertaining interpretation, not a statement of fact about your animal.
- We publish no accuracy figure, and we ask you not to treat any result as accurate. The confidence indicator shown with a result describes how consistent the measurements were with one another — nothing more.
- Researchers broadly agree that a cat's meow is a signal learned between one animal and one person rather than a shared language. There is no dictionary, so there can be no translation.
PawParley is provided for entertainment purposes only. Do not rely on it for any decision that matters.
3. It is not veterinary advice
PawParley is not a medical, diagnostic or veterinary device, and nothing in it is veterinary advice. It cannot detect pain, illness, injury or distress, and it must never be used to assess whether an animal needs care.
If you have any concern about your animal's health or behaviour, consult a qualified veterinary surgeon or a certified behaviourist. Never delay seeking professional advice because of something the app displayed.
4. Using the whistle safely
The whistle is a tone generator. It is not an ultrasonic dog whistle — a phone speaker cannot reproduce one — and it is not a device for stopping barking or correcting behaviour.
You agree to use it sensibly: start at a low volume, never hold the speaker close to an animal's ears, keep sessions short, and stop immediately if any animal shows signs of distress. Hearing damage is a function of loudness and duration. You are responsible for the welfare of animals and people around you when you use it, including anyone who may find high-frequency tones uncomfortable.
5. Your licence to use the app
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use PawParley on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, in line with the Usage Rules in Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions. This is a licence, not a sale, and all rights we don't expressly grant are reserved.
6. Prices and plans
PawParley can be used without paying. Some features are part of PawParley Pro, which is available as a subscription or as a one-time purchase.
| Plan | Price | Terms |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | £3.99 / week | Includes a 3-day free trial for new subscribers. Renews weekly until cancelled. |
| Annual | £24.99 / year | Renews annually until cancelled. |
| Lifetime | £39.99 once | A single payment. Does not renew and cannot lapse. |
We may change prices. A change never affects a period you have already paid for, and for an existing subscription it takes effect from the next renewal, with the notice Apple requires — you'll be asked to agree to a price rise before it is charged.
What “lifetime” means here. It means one payment and no recurring charge, for as long as PawParley is published and we are able to operate it on supported versions of iOS. We are not going to pretend we can promise anything beyond that, and we would rather say so now than in a refund email later.
7. Free trial and automatic renewal
- Payment is charged to your Apple ID account when you confirm the purchase.
- Subscriptions renew automatically unless auto-renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- Your account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends, at the price for your plan.
- The 3-day free trial is available once, to new subscribers only. If you don't cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, it converts automatically into a paid weekly subscription.
- If you buy a subscription while a free trial is running, any unused part of that trial is forfeited.
- You can manage your subscription and turn off auto-renewal in your Apple account settings at any time.
8. How to cancel
Cancelling happens in your Apple account, because Apple is the merchant. We have no way to cancel it for you.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
- Tap PawParley, then Cancel Subscription.
You can also do it in the App Store app: tap your profile picture, then Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. After cancelling you keep Pro access until the end of the period you've already paid for; deleting the app on its own does not cancel a subscription.
9. Refunds
Purchases are made from Apple, so refunds are Apple's to give. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue, reverse or guarantee a refund.
If Apple declines and you believe the charge was genuinely unfair, email us. We'll look at it and, where we think you have a point, write to Apple in support of your request.
If you're a consumer in the UK or EU you have statutory cancellation rights for digital content. By starting to use PawParley Pro immediately you may be asked to acknowledge that you lose the 14-day right to cancel once delivery has begun — those statutory rights are not affected by anything else in this section.
10. Restoring a purchase
Purchases are tied to the Apple ID that made them. On a new device, install PawParley, sign in with the same Apple ID and use Restore Purchases in the app's settings.
11. Acceptable use
Please don't: reverse-engineer, decompile or extract the models or assets from the app; use it to harass, frighten or harm any animal or person; use the whistle in a way that is likely to cause distress; resell or redistribute any part of it; or present its output as a factual, expert or diagnostic statement about an animal — including in advertising, in a dispute, or in any professional context.
12. Our content
The PawParley name, the app, its interface, its character illustrations, its sounds, its copy and its models belong to us or our licensors and are protected by copyright and other rights. The results the app generates are yours to enjoy and share personally; the app's illustrations, sound library and interface are not.
13. Changes to the app, and ending this agreement
We may add, change or remove features, and we may update these Terms. If a change materially reduces what you have paid for, we will make that clear in the app rather than burying it here, and the updated effective date at the top of this page will tell you when it happened. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept it.
You can end this agreement at any time by cancelling any subscription and deleting the app. We may suspend or end your access if you materially breach these Terms — in practice, only for the abusive uses listed in section 11.
14. Disclaimer
To the fullest extent permitted by law, PawParley is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, that it will run on every device or iOS version, or — and this one is the point of the whole product — that any reading it produces is correct. It is an interpretation of a measurement, offered for entertainment.
Nothing in this section limits your statutory rights as a consumer, which vary by country and are not affected by these Terms.
15. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of profit, data or goodwill, arising out of your use of PawParley.
Our total aggregate liability to you for all claims arising out of or relating to PawParley is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you actually paid us for the app in the 12 months before the claim arose, or (b) £50.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
Since it is worth being explicit: we accept no liability whatsoever for any decision taken about an animal's health, welfare, training or behaviour on the basis of something the app displayed. It is entertainment. Please treat it as entertainment.
16. Apple's terms
Because PawParley is distributed through the App Store, the following apply:
- This agreement is between you and us only, not with Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for PawParley.
- If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the app.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claim relating to the app — including product liability, any failure to conform to legal or regulatory requirements, and claims under consumer protection or similar legislation.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for the investigation and defence of any third-party claim that the app infringes intellectual property rights.
- You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and, upon your acceptance, have the right to enforce them against you.
17. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have non-exclusive jurisdiction.
If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory consumer-law provisions of your country of residence, and you may bring proceedings in your local courts where the law gives you that right.
